Weight Loss Coach Certification

Weight Loss Coach Certification

Many people feel jaded by exercise programs and diets that dont work; they never find the motivation to be fit which leads to obesity, depression, fatigue and the many health risks associated with an unhealthy lifestyle. The duties of a weight loss coach expands beyond just being a personal trainer to people who want to lose a few pounds or a few sizes. He is also a life coach. To bolster credentials, some weight loss coaches get certified.

What is a Weight Loss Coach?

To many, a weight loss coach provides the essential element that makes weight loss, fitness and well-being a reality in someones life: motivation. A coach must exude a positive and energetic presence that will transfer to clients, motivating them to face emotional challenges and improve their bodies from the inside out. A weight loss coach tailors unique programs to each client, equipping them with the tools they need to eat, exercise, feel better and have a different outlook on self care and their future well being.

Who Can Become Certified?

Weight loss coaches go through expert training to qualify for certification. Candidates may be already certified or licensed in other similar practices such as a registered dietitian, nurse or counselor. Their professional backgrounds may range from fitness care to psychological care, providing coaching as an adjunct to regular services. Or the candidate may be someone who has no professional training in the health sciences but just wishes to help others.

How to Get Certified

One may choose to undergo training though a recognized weight loss coaching or generalist life coaching program to attain the title of Certified Wellness Coach (CWC). There is a variety of schools that offer on-site practical training and many schools offer online certification programs as well.

Choosing the Right Program

Organizations that offer coaching programs differ in size, scope and reputation. Enroll in a program that is accredited by the International Coach Federation (ICF.) Global NLP Training is a good recommendation. Additionally, the National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association (NESTA) and the American Council on Exercise (ACE) both provide a lifestyle and weight management specialist program.

What Skills are Learned?

During certification courses, weight loss coaches learn several skills, including assessing the client. The key to coaching is to establish emotional understanding between client and coach. This involves identifying negative habits and the roots of feelings of discontent. The coach then identifies obstacles, tackles negative triggers and sets realistic goals and rewards for the client.

Healthy eating is very important in this changing world of food. A basic knowledge of good eating practices is necessary to help the client re-evaluate the way she eats and learn to ingest good foods. To accomplish this, the coach teaches the client healthy shopping and eating out strategies, healthy cooking, balancing calories and physical activity to control weight, using dietary supplements and not following diet fads.

Exercise is a crucial element to body image transformation, healthy bodies and minds. A weight loss coach creates a personalized exercise program catered to a clients areas of weakness. Therefore, knowledge of fitness instruction is necessary. A good coach helps a client learn more about her body, sees positive changes. This fosters positive attitudes about exercise.

Coaches need to create ways of keeping the client focused and continuously motivated through client support systems. This may involve getting the client to recruit a partner or peer group, teaching strategies to manage time and stress, getting the client back on track if he falls off the wagon and encouraging self talk and reflection.

Celebrating success is the best way to achieve and gauge a clients progress. Re-assessments should be done periodically to ensure the client continues to grow stronger, healthier and exceeds his own expectations. The coach should use benchmarking and reward the client every time a benchmark has been reached.
