Gluten-Free Indian Foods

Gluten-Free Indian Foods

Gluten is a type of protein that is found in barley, wheat and rye. This protein is capable of causing health problems, which is creating a trend for gluten-free dieting and the marketing of gluten-free products. Gluten intolerance is also known as celiac disease, and approximately 1 percent of the population is estimated to have this disease according to an article by USA Today. Indian cuisine offers a number of gluten-free options, both in grocery markets and Indian food restaurants. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Indian Kabobs

Indian kabobs are made with lamb, chicken, shrimp, fish or tofu in restaurants, or can be made at home with any choice of meat. In restaurants, these kabobs are marinated using Indian spices and yogurt sauce. Spices typically contain cumin, chili powder, coriander, turmeric and ginger, all of which are gluten-free. When dining out, check to make sure that the marinade, yogurt sauce and chutney served with the kabobs are gluten-free, as they may contain soy sauce or wheat flour, which are not gluten-free.

Mulligatawny

Mulligatawny is an Indian chicken and vegetable soup, and it is one of the most common types of spicy chicken soup that Indian restaurants carry. The downside to mulligatawny is that there are many variations to it, but a basic recipe is typically the base for this dish. Standard ingredients include chicken, carrots, celery, lentils, onions, potatoes, lemon juice, rice, tomatoes and potatoes. Milk or coconut milk may also be found in this recipe. When dining out, check to make sure that wheat flour is not included in the stock, as some recipes call for it as a thickening agent.

Jhinga Masala

Jhinga masala is shrimp with a coconut curry sauce, and it is one of the more common types of curry that Indian restaurants carry. The curry base is coconut milk in most cases, and other ingredients include ghee or oil, garlic, ginger, tamarind and garam masala powder, shrimp, crushed tomatoes and chopped onions. The dish can be served over basmati rice, and it may also include bay leaves or coriander leaves. When ordering this dish at an Indian food restaurant, check to make sure that no wheat flour has been used in the curry sauce, as it is sometimes utilized as a thickener.
