The Best Ideas for a Low Carb Breakfast

The best ideas for a low carb breakfast include some favorites in the American breakfast tradition, but other mainstays must be left behind. In diners and homes all over the country, a typical breakfast often includes eggs, bacon and a carbohydrate side such as potatoes and/or a piece of toast. Another ubiquitous American breakfast is cereal with milk. If you're on a low carb diet, the eggs and bacon can stay, but the rest has to go.

Eggs, Etc.

Fix bacon and eggs for a classic version of a low carb breakfast. Eggs are quick and easy to prepare and can be scrambled, fried, boiled or made into omelets and frittatas. Eggs and bacon contain no carbs, but they have enough protein and fat to keep your appetite satisfied for hours.

Scramble some eggs with jalapeno peppers and put into a low carb tortilla. Top with some low-fat cheese and salsa for a delicious on-the-go breakfast.

Jicama Hash Browns and a Simple Frittata

Jicama is an often-overlooked vegetable that can be fried up just like potato hash browns. Peel and slice a jicama using a hand-held grater or a food processor. Add some diced onion and fry together in a small amount of oil until nice and crispy. Season with salt and pepper.

To go along with the hash browns, make a smaller version of a frittata. Dice a half-cup of ham and one medium onion. Brown them in some oil in a small, non-stick pan. Once the onions are translucent, add two eggs that have been beaten, reduce the heat and cover. Let the eggs set for about 10 minutes. Once they have solidified, remove the frittata from the pan and serve it in wedges. This is also great as leftovers if you would like to double the recipe.

Fruit Options

Eat 1 cup of cubed cantaloupe with 1 cup of cottage cheese. Although fruit does contain some carbs, cantaloupe has only 15 grams per cup, making it an excellent breakfast choice. Cottage cheese is packed with protein and calcium and is great combined with the cantaloupe. Not only will this meal satisfy your sweet tooth, it will keep you satisfied throughout the morning.

Mix some berries into plain yogurt. Choose blueberries, strawberries, raspberries or any berry of your choice. Berries of all kinds have low carbohydrate levels despite their sweetness. Combine a half-cup of berries with 1 cup of low-fat yogurt for a calcium-rich, protein-packed breakfast that is low in carbs. This meal contains about 15 grams of carbohydrates.
