The Pyramid Diet Plan is a visual description of the types of food to eat each day. This diet plan focuses on eating whole grains, fruits and vegetables, protein and dairy while limiting the amount of saturated and trans fats found in cooking oil, butter spreads and certain foods. Depending on your health, exercise level, current eating habits and medical history, you can easily adapt this plan to your lifestyle.

    Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet.

    To follow the Pyramid Diet Plan, it is recommended that you eat at least 3 oz. of grains, a generous amount of vegetables and fruits, low-fat dairy products including milk, cheese and yogurt, and low-fat protein and limit oils that contain saturated and trans fats. Sources of protein include dry beans and nuts such as almonds and peanuts, low-fat beef, fish and poultry.

Tips for Following the Pyramid Diet Plan

    When creating a menu based on the Pyramid Diet Plan, consider the types of food you enjoy eating. Be prepared to try new foods and food combinations.

    Slowly add new foods such as whole grains and protein sources other than meat to help your body adjust instead of completely overhauling your diet right away. Decrease the amount of high fat foods while replacing these foods with fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy and protein.

    Avoid fast food restaurants and cook from home more often so you have more control over how your food is prepared. Trying grilling and baking food in olive oil instead of frying in high fat vegetable oil.

    Review cookbooks that feature healthy meals and plan a menu for the week. Buy fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices to enhance the flavors of your meals.
