The market today is glutted with diet pills, diet foods, fitness equipment and weight-loss programs. These all cost money. Is it possible to whittle your waist without thinning your wallet? It takes a little more personal discipline, but it can be done.

Find a friend who is willing to keep you accountable. Tell her that you want to lose weight and that you want her to help you. Make sure she cares about you enough to be honest and strict.
2Keep a daily log of everything you eat---meals, snacks and beverages. Give this list to your friend and discuss it with her. It is important to realize just how much and how often you really eat.
3Cut your portions in half. When you dish out food, serve yourself only half of what you would normally eat, and save the rest for leftovers. If you're eating out, split a meal with somebody, or tell the waiter ahead of time that you want only a half portion.
4Eat only at specified times. Three meals and maybe an afternoon snack are plenty for most people. Some people do very well on two meals a day---a hearty breakfast and lunch, with only fruit or a light salad in the evening. This is an excellent formula for weight loss.

Find a friend for an exercise partner. It's best if this friend is already in shape and enjoys exercise. Ask him to work out with you at least three times a week; five or six is optimal.
6Walk or bike for a full hour at a time if possible. At first, walk gently, but then gradually build up speed and endurance. This will be more effective than two 30-minute sessions.
7Be consistent! Rain, snow, sleet and hail won't stop the postman, and they shouldn't stop you. You can't lose weight unless you're faithful in your exercise. Make sure your exercise partner is willing to be consistent as well.
8Motivate yourself verbally, not just mentally. When you're walking in the rain and really want to quit, tell yourself, "I can do this! I am losing weight! I am going to look great!" Say it out loud, and ask your friend to tell you similar things.
