What Is the Swank MS Diet?

In 1948, Dr. Roy Swank developed a diet low in saturated fats and polyunsaturated oils to help ease the symptoms of multiple sclerosis. The diet allows large amounts of grains, fruits and vegetables, but small amounts of red and fatty meats.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

MS is a disease in which the body's immune system erodes the outer covering of the nerves. The disease disrupts communication between brain and body.

Swank Diet

The Swank MS Diet was developed by Dr. Swank when he noticed the rise of MS cases and the increase in saturated animal fats in our diet. He believed that MS could be slowed by going back to eating the way we did before processed foods became popular.

Swank Do's and Don'ts

According to the Swank MS Foundation, saturated fats should be limited to 15 grams per day, while unsaturated fats should be limited to 20 to 50 grams per day. Red meat is prohibited in the first year. Afterward, three ounces per week is permitted. Dairy products must have less than 1 percent butterfat. The patient should not consume any processed foods that contain saturated fat. A daily teaspoon of cod liver oil is recommended.
