Somersizing Diet Plan Tips

Somersizing is a diet plan created by actress Suzanne Somers. Somers reportedly took her cue from the French diet, which uses many fats such as cream and butter and yet still results in few cases of obesity. The main idea behind the plan is food combining. Somers theorizes that eating food in the wrong combinations leads to insulin resistance and retention of fat. If you eat your food in the right combinations, you will burn fat, lose weight, and later be able to stay at your target weight easily.

Basics

Somersizing is essentially a low-carbohydrate diet. Like the Atkins diet, it eliminates white sugar, corn, potatoes, and white flour. Unlike Atkins and most other diets, the Somersize diet puts a great deal of emphasis on food combining. Fruits should be eaten alone, on an empty stomach. Fats, carbs, and proteins should be eaten with vegetables. But protein, fat, and carbohydrates are not to be eaten together. In other words, you can carbohydrates with vegetables or you can eat protein with vegetables, but you should not eat protein, carbs, and vegetables together. Proteins and fats should be kept away from carbohydrates at all times. If you switch from a protein meal to a carbohydrate meal, you should wait at least three hours in between consumption.

Somersizing also recommends eating high protein meals and smaller meals consumed more often. If you are hungry, you don't have to wait or starve yourself. There is no portion restriction. Somers says you should eat until you are full. Somers has said, "I eat a lot of food-three meals a day. I eat real food. You'd be surprised how many Americans rarely eat real food." The diet usually results in about 1100-1300 calories a day.

Somersize Foods

There are four basic food groups in Somersizing: protein and fats, vegetables, "carbos", and fruit. There is also a list of foods to eliminate, called "funky foods", which includes almost all sugars, beets, coffee, alcohol, bananas and carrots, among others.

There are two levels to the Somersize diet. Level one is the weight loss level, and level two is a maintenance level. In level two, you are allowed to add some funky foods to your diet if you wish. Soy is generally forbidden as a funky food, but vegetarians are allowed to add it to level one.

If you want to Somersize, eliminate the funky foods from your diet, especially sugar. Remember not to combine carbohydrates with proteins and fats. Then enjoy foods such as beef tenderloin with mushrooms, shrimp scampi, and angel food cake.
