How to Diagnose Unintentional Weight Loss

How to Diagnose Unintentional Weight Loss

Unexplained or unintentional weight loss is when a person drops pounds without an increase in physical activity or change in diet. Significant weight loss without trying may be a side effect of an underlying medical condition. If you or someone you know has lost more than ten pounds without a change in lifestyle, seek medical attention.

Instructions

Diagnose Unintentional Weight Loss

    1

Weigh yourself on a regular basis. Minor fluctuation is normal, but significant loss without trying can be a sign of other health risks. Also be aware of your body changes without the use of a scale. Pay attention to your skin, the size and shape of your face, and how your clothes fit.

    2

Ask yourself questions about your recent lifestyle. Have any changes occurred in your house or life that increased your stress level? Have you made a change to your diet or cut out any foods? Have you been exercising more or less? Have you starting taking a new medication? Do you have a painful mouth sore or tooth that is preventing you from eating normally? If you answered yes to any of these questions, that is likely the cause of your weight loss.

    3

Consult a medical professional if the weight loss continues or you cannot diagnose the cause yourself. It is wise to consult a doctor if you self-diagnose because there may be a serious hidden medical issue. The doctor will measure your weight and ask questions about your family history and lifestyle.

    4

Allow the doctor to do additional tests to ensure the weight loss is not a symptom of an underlying disease. Some causes of unintentional weight loss are cancer, digestive problems, chronic diarrhea, anorexia, depression and infection. Your doctor may check your blood pressure, screen for cancer, perform a diabetes test, and ask you questions about your emotional stability.

    5

Treat the weight loss according to your doctor's diagnosis. If the weight loss is a symptom of another problem such as disease or cancer, follow your doctor's instructions. Always maintain a healthy and balanced diet. Do not attempt to cure unintentional weight loss by binge eating or quitting your exercise routine.
