Natural Weight Loss Medications

There are hundreds of pills in a typical medication aisle claiming to be "all natural," "appetite suppressants" and weight loss miracle pills. But which statements are to be believed? And, more importantly, which are not to be trusted, or even trialed due to the health risks involved? Below are descriptions and reviews of some of the most commonly known "natural" weight loss medications: ephedrine, St. John's wort and green tea extract.

Ephedrine

Ephedrine (also known as epitonin and ma huang), a drug once commonly used in weight loss pills, is said to be able to suppress appetite, increase metabolism, and treat cough and asthma, but there is little evidence that it greatly helps to reduce weight. In fact, ephedrine is more well-known as a dangerous chemical that can also be used to make metamphetamine (more commonly known as the illegal drug speed). Negative side effects of ephedrine range from high blood pressure to stroke and even death. Due to these side effects, the Food and Drug Administration banned the sale of ephedrine in February 2004.

St. John's Wort

Named for St. John the Baptist, St. John's wort comes from the wild plant Hypericum perforatum. Growing in warm climates such as Northern California, the plant is dried and processed into a powder that can be made into either a pill or tea format. St. John's wort has been used for more than 2,000 years as a natural painkiller, providing relief to those suffering from arthritis and menstrual cramps. Today, St. John's wort is primarily used as an antidepressant. While there are many claims that this plant helps promote weight loss, there have been no clinical studies substantiating these claims.

Before taking St. John's wort, consider its side effects and possible interactions with other medications. It can interact with or block the effects of birth control or prescription drugs and should not be combined with other antidepressants.

As always, it is important to consult your physician before starting a new medication, natural or otherwise.

Green Tea Extract

Green tea extract is a natural supplement that is in the ingredient listings of almost every weight loss pill and product on the market. The list of benefits derived from green tea is extensive, some of the most well-known being the promotion of antioxidants and cognitive development, as well as the regulation of blood sugar levels; in addition, research is under way to test its ability to help prevent cancer. As far as weight loss is concerned, claims have been made that green tea promotes fat burning, since it is a source of caffeine.

Unlike other natural supplements, the positive effects of green tea have been studied and substantiated by The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Green tea has been found to help increase metabolism and lower body fat and cholesterol levels, while producing little to no undesired side effects.

Whether taken it in tea or pill format, green tea is an excellent addition to your daily routine that will help you reach your weight loss goals.
