List of Turkish Basic Foods

Turkish food is a fusion of European, Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines. The culinary traditions in Turkey have been around for more than 1,300 years, in large part due to its location and Mediterranean climate. Turkish cuisine is one type of food that forms the basis of the popular and healthy Mediterranean Diet, which focuses on vegetables, lean meats and healthy fats. Turkey's basic foods vary, depending on the region of the country, but they combine a world of different flavors wherever you go.

Eastern Region

Turkey's eastern region is known for its cold winters and warm summers. The region produces basic foods such as butter, yogurt, cheeses, honey, meats and cereals. The long winters in the region make local dishes such as yogurt soup and meatballs covered with locally grown herbs and served with hot tea very popular.

Heartland Region

The heartland of Turkey features rolling hills and wheat fields, making breads and pastries some of the most prevalent basic foods in that region. Turkish cooks use clay ovens, also called tandors, to prepare basic local dishes like kebabs; boreks, which are baked or fried stuffed pastries made of a thin flaky dough; and local vegetables.

Western Region

The western region of Turkey is full of warm, fertile valleys that produce a wide variety of basic fruits and vegetables. You'll find Turkish basics such as apples, figs, cabbage and onions in the western region. Fish is one of the most commonly consumed foods, as well. Olive trees are abundant, and the region is renowned for its olive oil, a staple in many types of Turkish dishes.

Black Sea Coast Region

The Black Sea coast, protected by the Caucasian Mountains, has a temperate climate perfect for growing Turkish staples like hazelnuts, corn and tea. This coastal region is famous for its abundant seafood. Fish is a staple in most dishes in the Black Coast region.

Southeast Region

The southeastern region features a hot climate that allows for a longer growing season. Because of that, the southeast region produces a large number of fruits and vegetables featured in many basic Turkish dishes. Kebabs with local vegetables and meats like lamb and chicken are very popular in the region. Spicy curries, used to flavor many different types of dishes, are prevalent.
