Easy Diets for Picky People

Easy Diets for Picky People

Dieting typically involves depriving oneself of specific foods, usually with the ultimate goal of losing weight. Many people find diets difficult to follow because often the most desirable foods happen to make the most impact on their waistlines. Fad diets such as the Atkins low carbohydrate diet can be difficult to follow as well as unhealthy. Carbohydrates are needed in a healthy diet for proper brain function and energy. Carbohydrates also allow people to feel full faster, and so people following low-carb diets may overcompensate with fatty or high-sodium foods to feel satisfied. Depriving oneself of anything enjoyable can prove to be too extreme for most people, who will most likely relapse and reject the diet. Diet foods are stereotypically less flavorful and less desirable to most, especially picky eaters.

No Such Thing as an "Easy" Diet

While there is no "easy" diet, there are many less difficult ways to eat healthy, and lose weight, for even the pickiest of people. One key point that dieters must remember is that while there are many great healthy alternatives to their favorite indulgences, these alternatives might not be as instantly satisfying to the taste buds and will take some getting used to.

Portion Control and Bring on the Veggies

A dieter does not need to deprive herself of her favorite foods, but she must substitute with some healthy choices and monitor portion size. Opting for grilled chicken or fish when craving meat, or choosing a smaller, leaner cut of red meat, can aid in cutting out unnecessary fat. One helpful way to monitor portion control is to try to always fill three quarters of your plate with vegetables, and the remaining quarter with protein and carbohydrates. Salads are a great way to get vegetables, which can be made more interesting with the addition of fruit, cheese, nuts and seeds. However, there are also many ways for picky eaters to enjoy vegetables as well. Grilling or roasting vegetables with garlic and herbs can make a veggie dish more appealing. Another tip when cooking pasta is to replace half of a usual serving of pasta with cauliflower. The cauliflower and pasta can be boiled together in one pot, and the pasta dish can be prepared as usual, fooling picky eaters into getting their vegetable intake.

Spaghetti Squash and Other Delicious Substitutes

Another great way to "fool" a picky eater into dieting in a healthy manner is to prepare his favorite food, but replace certain ingredients. Substitute oils and fat with chicken or vegetable stock when seasoning foods, or prepare his desired fried foods by baking them instead.

A dieter's "secret" is spaghetti squash, which is a large squash, stringy in texture and similar to angel-hair pasta. A picky eater can prepare his favorite pasta dishes using the sqash instead of pasta. He can satisfy his cravings, without all the unnecesary carbohydrates.

Whole Grain Is Always Better

One simple and very effective way to modify a diet with limited effort or alteration is to substitute white grains with whole grains. Replacing white bread with whole wheat, and switching from white rice and pasta to brown, can make quite an impact on one's waistline among other positive benefits. A diet rich in whole grains has also been proved to help prevent heart disease, diabetes and other chronic conditions. Again, while substitutions may take some getting used to, these simple changes will keep a picky dieter more satisfied than any quick and easy fad diet.
