Monitoring calcium intake can help protect your bones and help you avoid conditions such as osteoporosis. Adults who are 50 years old or younger should get 1,000 milligrams of calcium daily. Those older than 50 should get more calcium, at least 1,200 milligrams each day. The Mayo Clinic also recommends asking your doctor about boosting vitamin D consumption.

    Increase Protein and Calorie Consumption. Some people who have hyperthyroidism experience a large amount of muscle loss. To prevent this, talk with your doctor about ramping up protein and calorie consumption while getting your hyperthyroidism under control. Once you've regulated the condition with medications, your doctor may recommend cutting out the extra protein and calories.

    Foods to Avoid. According to the Mayo Clinic, certain foods can interact with your thyroid medication. Avoid eating too many walnuts, soybean flour and cottonseed meal. Also, make sure to discuss over-the-counter and prescription medications with your doctor. Certain medications, such as ulcer products and antacids, can reduce the effectiveness of your hyperthyroidism medication.

If, however, you experience symptoms such as rapid weight loss, an increased heartbeat or unexplained swelling in your neck, contact your doctor immediately. These can be signs that your body isn't responding to medication and diet changes.
