Walnut Oil for Weight Loss

Anecdotally, walnut oil is a cure for weight loss because it prevents appetite from overcoming the will of the dieter by satisfying hunger cravings. Although walnut oils have been used in cosmetics for years because of its antioxidant and moisturizing properties, further uses of walnut oil are currently being examined. For example, the anti-inflammatory effects of walnut oil currently are being examined by scientists. A study on the effects of diet and inflammation showed that intake of walnuts were responsible for lowering an inflammatory marker in walnut eaters.

Metabolic Syndrome

Some consider metabolic syndrome to be an inflammatory state. Cholesterol, weight gain, and metabolic syndrome are intricately intertwined. Eating the wrong foods can lead to a panoply of related conditions including too much insulin, which is a pre-diabetic state called insulin resistance, and can trigger cholesterol deposits in your arteries. High cholesterol can lead to cardiovascular disease and weight gain as well. Making appropriate lifestyle changes can help turn around this syndrome and its markers, which can help the body return to a normal weight as well. In the European Journal of Nutrition, dieters were shown to be able to reduce their insulin levels by adding walnuts to the diet.

Weight and Cholesterol

There is scientific evidence on the benefits of diet and the relationship of lowering cholesterol to lowering weight. A 2009 study in the journal Public Nutrition concludes that Mediterranean diets including the essential fatty acids, nuts and vegetables can help a person in several metabolic measurements, including high-density lipoprotein (HDL) measurements, insulin resistance, body fat ratio, body mass and waist measurements. In a study in the journal Angiology, patients given walnut oil three times a day were able to reduce a particular marker for high cholesterol tryglicerides by 1/3 to 1/5, in some patients. Additionally, a study published in the Annals of internal medicine showed that people given walnuts as a replacement for some of their dietary fat intake were able to reduce their total cholesterol as well as LDL cholesterol.

Clogged Arteries and Weight Loss

Treatment of clogged arteries is a healthy part of weight loss. Lifestyle changes, including exercise, can be dangerous in those who do not have a treatment plan for their cardiovascular health when they are trying to lose weight as well. Reporter Jennifer Warner writes that scientists recommend nutritional supplements in addition to a strong exercise plan in order to stave off dangerous situations such as stroke, which could stem from exercise while having clogged arteries.

Diet and Cardiovascular Health

The literature suggests that walnut intake can be beneficial to artery health, and that that diet can protect arterial health when overweight conditions have caused clogging of the arteries. For example, in a study in the Journal of Nutrition, rodents fed a high-fat diet were protected in particular markers of cardiovascular stress by eating walnuts. In human dieters who consumed walnut oil after a meal, compared to dieters who ate olive oil after a meal, walnut oil was shown to improve a marker for high blood pressure as opposed to the control. A similar outcome was found in cholesterol patients in New Zealand.

Walnuts and Weight

Conversely, some are concerned that high consumption of nut oils can increase weight gain. However, a study by the school of Public Health, in Loma Linda, California, showed that walnut intake had a negligible effect on weight gain, when quantity and calorie intake was taken into account.
