Vitamin B12 is essential for a person's overall well-being and good health. Although injections may be required for people who are deficient in vitamin B12, there is no evidence showing that vitamin B12 injections also assist with weight loss.
Function
Vitamin B12 is necessary for the body's growth and development. It helps create DNA and helps to produce and maintain red blood cells and nerve cells. It also helps the body process carbohydrates and folic acid.
Source
Vitamin B12 is bound to proteins in food, and is found in animal sources such as fish, meat, poultry and dairy products.
Weight Loss
Mayo Clinic nutritionist Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D., writes that no scientific evidence exists proving that vitamin B12, in any form, helps with weight loss. The speculation may be based on a 2005 study which indicated that people who took supplements, "including vitamin B12, gained weight more slowly over a 10-year period than did those who took no supplements."
Theories/Speculation
The speculation behind weight loss is that vitamin B12, as a protein, enhances a person's energy and metabolism. A more active person (and someone who gets their recommended daily allowance of all vitamins and minerals) will likely lose more weight.
Warning
Loss of appetite and resulting weight loss can, however, be a symptom of vitamin B12 deficiency. Other symptoms can include hair loss, depression, anemia or even neurological symptoms such as confusion or dementia. People who follow a long-term vegetarian or vegan diet are particularly prone to vitamin B12 deficiency.
