Greek Food Facts for Kids

If you are teaching your students or children about Greece, one of the most exciting subjects is the food. The Greek diet has been praised for its heart-healthy properties while still being a popular dining choice around the world. It is strongly suggested that while teaching Greek food facts some food samples provided. If you are teaching your own children about Greek food, you can try making a Greek meal per week or several times a week for a month.

When Greeks Eat

Greeks eat at different times of the day than North Americans. The Greek way of life often has them up early with an extremely light breakfast (or "proino") that may consist of as little as a cup of coffee. In the middle of the morning, Greeks will have a post-breakfast snack that might involve a bread-based dish like a cheese pie or a "koulouri." The Greek dinner occurs in the middle of the day around 2 p.m. and it is their largest meal. This meal, called the "mesimeriano," consists of appetizers, salads, a baked meat dish, bread and wine, and is followed by a nap for an hour or two. The Greek evening meal ("vrathino") is eaten around 8:30 to 9:00 p.m. and it consists of salads, vegetables, omelets or other light fare and is concluded by a Greek dessert.

Fresh Foods

The Greek diet consists of many fresh foods. These include fruits and vegetables, all kinds of nuts, and herbs and spices. While there are fast-food restaurants in Greece, most Greek diets consist primarily of fresh foods instead. You can tell the kids that the children in Greece eat and enjoy the salads at almost every meal.

Healthy Fats

The Greek diet consists of a lot of what are referred to as the healthy fats. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats can be found in nuts and olive oil. Some kids may believe, like many adults, that all fats are bad for you. Try to explain to them that saturated fats (those from animals and milk) are unhealthy, while the other fats can actually be healthy. Try sampling some nuts and some bread with olive oil to the kids. Explain that olive oil is used instead of butter and other types of dipping sauce in Greece.

Greek Food Pyramid

Show the kids a Mediterranean food pyramid (see Resources) to explain what foods are eaten frequently in Greece. This will help you to show that red meat is eaten rarely while fruits, vegetables, oils and cheeses are eaten every day. Ask the kids what fruits and vegetables they would eat if they had to eat nine servings of them every day.

Greek Desserts

While talking about Greek food does not have to focus on the desserts, this will probably be the subject that the kids are the most interested in. Some examples of Greek desserts are karythopita (walnut cake), baklava, melomakarona (honey-drenched cookie) and the layered fillo pastry. Mention that some of these items like the melomakarona are eaten only at special times of the year like Christmas. The best way to talk about these desserts is to make or buy as many different kinds as you can and provide samples to the kids.
