How to Get Enough Calories on a Gluten-Free Diet

How to Get Enough Calories on a Gluten-Free Diet

A gluten free diet is recommended for treatment of individuals with Celiac disease. Celiac disease affects the small intestines when gluten found in foods, such as grains, interacts with the body improperly and causes the small intestine to swell. Staying healthy is a gluten-free dieter's concern, and adding calories to a limited diet may become a challenge if the Celiac sufferer does not know where to start. Many gluten free foods are high in calories and can be added to a specialty diet to increase the intake of a diet restricted individual.

Instructions

    1

Include meat in a gluten-free diet, especially fatty meats. Pork and lamb have high calorie content; processed meat also tops the calorie lists. Attempt to eat natural meat and meat fats, and limit processed meat if health is a concern. Greasy meats, such as duck and goose, have high calorie counts. Chicken balances the scale on the lower end of calorie counts. Make sure the meat is not battered or coated in any form, as many coatings contain bread or grains and cannot be consumed by a Celiac sufferer.

    2

Drink milk, and load up on the dairy products. Whole milk contains more calories than its counterparts, while sheep milk contains more calories than cow or goat milk. Choose butter over margarine to increase caloric intake on a restricted, gluten-free diet. Find gluten-free recipes including cream cheese for added calories. Avoid mixed dairy products, such as milkshakes, unless there is access to the ingredient list. Some mixed products will include gluten as a thickening or binding agent.

    3

Develop a taste for caviar. Fish is a high calorie food, as it is naturally oily. Caviar has a very high caloric count and is good for gluten free diets when it is not combined with gluten products. Haddock and sole also contain high calories. Check fish before consumption to ensure the food is clear of batter, as most fish batter is grain based.
