How to Use Thinspiration to Stick to your Diet

"Thispiration" is a term for using images of thin or fit people as inspiration for weight loss. Thinspiration works by making a positive association between healthy choices and healthy looking people. It is much more effective than negative reinforcement methods, such as using images of obese men and women to shame oneself for eating badly or not exercising.

If you need more motivation to stick to your diet and exercise plans, here's how thinspiration can work for you.

    Good nutrition is the cornerstone of every weight loss diet. So for thinspiration in the kitchen, tape images of healthy women (or men) to the front of your refrigerator. The next time you go to the fridge looking for a piece of cheesecake as a snack, the image of a thin woman jogging, drinking water, or eating an apple will encourage you to find a healthier alternative.

    Place pictures of skinny and fit women on the cabinet or cupboard where you keep your exercise equipment. For example, if you keep your work out clothes and free weights in a drawer, tape an image of a gym scene on the drawer. Choose images where the people are smiling while they exercise, to help reinforce the positive aspects of exercising.

    Change your computer desktop image to a thinpirational image. It can be a picture of fruits and veggies, thin people eating salad, or fit people exercising and drinking water.

    If you commute by car and usually grab quick bites at fast food restaurants, tape a thinspirational picture to your glove box. Pack some apples and rice cakes in the glove box, or stop by a grocery store to buy a fresh snack.

    In your wallet keep a few small images of think people in front of your credit card, and in with the cash. This can help you resist impulse-buying junk food.

    Over time, using thinspiration will help you associate healthy lifestyle choices to happiness and looking good, and that in turn will help you stick to a weight loss plan.

    There are many more places where you can put positive images. Place them where ever you may be tempted to eat badly, or tape them to places where you will be reminded to exercise. Always choose images that include people smiling and enjoying healthy activities.
