ADHD High-Protein Diet

A well-known doctor and researcher, Dr. Daniel Amen, suggests that modifying one's diet can help improve symptoms of AD/HD, or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. There is no standard acceptance in the health industry about how diet impacts ADHD symptoms, or even that it does at all. However, Amen's research and anecdotal evidence from other health experts and patients themselves suggests that an increase in protein could help improve overall brain function. In turn, ADHD symptoms could be reduced.

Protein affects neurotransmitters

According to Dr. Amen, proteins are important for brain health, notably the function of neurotransmitters, which have an effect on ADD symptoms.

How Protein Helps

Increasing protein in the diet can improve production of necessary amino acids, which improve brain function.

Protein Sources

Dr. Amen suggests eating complete proteins--such as chicken, turkey, low-fat milk products, and soy-based foods.

Protein at Every Meal

Eating healthy protein at each meal can help improve brain function throughout the day, according to Amen.

Snacks

Mid-day snacks with protein have shown promise in Amen's diet research for ADHD.
