Decaf Tea & Celiac Disease

Decaf Tea & Celiac Disease

Individuals suffering from celiac disease can't tolerate gluten, which adds flavor and texture to many foods (breads specifically). Celiac.com reports that one in 133 Americans suffers from this condition. But many gluten-free, decaffeinated teas are available.

Tea and a Gluten-Free Diet

A gluten-free diet requires avoiding anything (including teas) containing or derived from wheat (including kamut and spelt), barley, rye, and triticale and sometimes oats. Gluten is added to some foods (even teas) for flavoring, stabilizing or thickening.

Where to Find Gluten-Free Decaf Teas

Numerous tea manufacturers offer decaffeinated, gluten-free teas in their product lines. Ensure that the tea is fully labeled with ingredients and says "gluten free" on the box. You can purchase decaf, gluten-free teas online or locally in most grocery and health foods stores. Check labels carefully.

Watch Out for Flavored Teas

According to GlutenFreeQuestions.com, coffee and tea "do not contain gluten in their pure forms." Flavored decaffeinated teas may have gluten added as an enhancer, but pure decaffeinated teas usually do not contain gluten. Tea drink mixes often contain gluten ingredients.

Decaffeinated Gluten-Free Teas

Bigelow offers a list of gluten-free teas, including Earl Grey Decaf, English Teatime Decaffeinated and Green Tea Decaffeinated. Celestial Seasonings also offers a line of these teas, including Caffeine Free Herbal Tea, Decaf Honey Chamomile Green Tea and China Pearl Decaf White Tea.

About Rooibos Tea

Rooibos, a tea that comes mainly from South Africa, is naturally caffeine free. It's made from a plant, not a tea leaf. Rooibos teas are acceptable for celiac disease sufferers, but make sure to carefully read each tea label.

Creamers and Sweeteners

Some tea drinkers enjoy adding milk, cream or other dairy products to their teas, but many celiac disease sufferers are also lactose intolerant. Also, some sweeteners contain gluten. You may want to investigate natural tea sweeteners such as stevia.
