Grain Free Foods

Grain-free foods are those that do not contain grains such as wheat, rice, corn, millet, barley or oats. People who suffer from digestive disorders and conditions such as Crohn's disease and colitis may benefit from eating grain-free foods. Although whole grains provide nutrients and fiber, there are many grain-free food options to choose from.

Meats and Cheeses

    Meats, including pork, beef and chicken, do not contain grains in their raw state. Fresh fish is another grain-free food, and it has the added benefit of containing heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. To ensure a grain-free diet, it's best to buy meat from a butcher or at a farmer's market. Certain meats that are processed and breaded contain grains in the breading.

    Cheese is a grain-free food as well. Choose from a wide variety, including cheddar, mozzarella, Swiss, muenster, colby, feta and goat's cheese.

Nuts, Legumes and Seeds

    Nuts, legumes and seeds are among the best grain-free foods because they provide many of the same nutrients you would get from grains. Choose nuts such as almonds, peanuts, pistachios, pecans, cashews and walnuts. There are many varieties of legumes to choose from as well, including peas, lentils, kidney beans, black beans, pinto beans, garbanzo beans and Lima beans. Seeds such as quinoa, sunflower, amaranth, flaxseed and buckwheat are grain-free options.

Fruits and Vegetables

    Fruits and vegetables are among the healthiest grain-free foods you can eat. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables can help lower blood pressure; reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke and some cancers; decrease your risk of digestive problems; and help regulate blood glucose levels. Choose from a variety of fruits such as apples, oranges, berries, melons, bananas, kiwi, lemons and limes. Choose vegetables such as lettuce, carrots, celery, spinach, kale, sweet potatoes, peppers, eggplant, mushrooms, onions, broccoli and cauliflower.
